PRSU appeals government to address demand for enhancement of salary

Noklak, August 3 (MExN): The Pathso Range Students’ Union (PRSU) has expressed solidarity with the genuine demand of the Nagaland Village Guards Association (NVGA) for the enhancement of their salary and strongly urged the Expert Committee of the Nagaland State Government for the recommendation of the same to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) from their end.

The Village Guards (VGs) are actively doing their duties in the villages, almost like the roles of police in urban areas and hence they should be paid reasonably, PRSU said in a statement release by its President P Zuhing and Secretary, Information and Publicity, Khumong T.

The union maintained that Nagaland Village Guards are unique and locally specific law enforcement force, which remains very much relevant in the interiors of the state. At the village level, they play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, curbing illegal activities, and quick responses during natural disasters or emergencies.

The VGs are doing round the clock duty, 24X7 on rotation basis at their barracks and patrol the village, to ensure safety and security. In villages, they act as the first line of defense against any potential threats and curb criminal activities. The VGs also collaborate with the security forces and provide assistance in various law enforcement operations and investigations. One such example is, curbing the manace of illegal drugs smuggling where the Village Guards intercept the smugglers and handover to the police, the union added.

Considering the critical roles they perform, PRSU stated that it is only ‘fair and just’ that their dedication be recognized through reasonable enhancement of salary which will also ensure their continued motivation and commitment to serving the people of Nagaland.

Therefore, the PRSU has called for the attention of the Nagaland state government that, they must now prioritize for the welfare of the VGs and address the demands of the Nagaland Village Guards Association.
