Nagaland: ‘Violence against women-A violation against Human Rights’

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence in Mokokchung culminated with a panel discussion on the topic ‘Violence Against Women – A Violation Against Human Rights’ commemorating the world’s Human Rights Day on December 10.

Organized by District Administration & Sakhi One Stop Centre, Mokokchung on the theme, ‘UNITE! Activism to end Violence against Women and Girls’, the 16-days of activism commenced on November 25. The panel discussion was held at Jungshinokdang Hall, Clark Theological College (CTC), Aolijen. 

Among the four speakers, Dr Akala Imchen, Associate Professor, CTC talked on the main topic with special reference to violence against women in Naga society; Limasenla Jamir, Assistant Professor, FAC, Mokokchung spoke about violence against women in Nagaland, its causes and forms while T Ngipchem Konyak, Doctoral Scholar, CTC and Pelesevi Mor, MTh II, CTC presented on violence against women with special reference to the Konyak Nagas and Angami Nagas respectively. 

The panel talk was followed by discussion which was moderated by Bendangrenla S Longkumer, Assistant Professor, FAC, Mokokchung. Lengthy discussions were made where the issue of inheritance, psychological and mental abuse and participation of women in politics and the like were deliberated. The discussion ended with the moderator making some strong indicators that the structural system needs to be rethought of and change should start from the primary unit which is the family and that the time is now for change to materialize. 

Prof Rev Dr A Temjen Jamir, Principal, CTC gave the welcome address and an introduction to the programme while Sentilong Ozukum, SDO (Civil) Mokokchung and Nodal Officer Sakhi- One Stop Centre explained about Sakhi-One Stop Centre, its functions and programmes. Vitolu, EAC, Mokokchung who was the chairperson also delivered the vote of thanks while benediction was pronounced by Rev Dr A Tali Ao, Associate Professor & Dean, CTC. The panel discussion was attended by students of CTC.
