Nagaland’s first modern abattoir to set up in Dmr

Dimapur, September 15 (MExN): Nagaland will now have a new modern abattoir or slaughter house which will be set up at Khatkati Road in Dimapur.

The DMC in a press note said that the objective of setting up a modern slaughter house is to make available “hygienically slaughtered wholesome meat” to the consumers and also humane handling of animals.

It also stated that the launching of modern abattoir would be aided by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MFPI), which has launched a comprehensive scheme for modernisation of abattoirs across the country.

It mentioned that the scheme aids at providing facilities for scientific and less painful slaughtering, chilling, effluent treatment plant, drainage, by-product utilisation etc.

The DMC stated: “Hygienic and scientific slaughtering and optimum utilisation of by products are the most important issues in the meat industry today. This is due to the emerging health threats of the zoonotic diseases through meat. Consumer awareness has also increased and people seek hygienic meat, albeit at a higher price.”

The note further added that in Dimapur alone around 30,000 goats, 45,000 bovines and 75,000 pigs are slaughtered annually out of which most of them comes under unauthorised slaughtering. Moreover, it mentioned that that DMC takes care of registered slaughtering of animals in Dimapur.

It also lamented that most of the present slaughter houses are “very small and could hardly handle the total demands of the Dimapur city population which also indirectly encourages unauthorised slaughtering” in and around the city.

It also went on saying that to help in modernisation; the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MFPI) will be providing a grant of 75% over the cost of the plant, machinery, building and civil works. The project is proposed to be implemented under public private partnership mode.

The investors have been selected through a competitive bidding process where Look East Construction Pvt. Ltd., Dimapur and Meatek Food Machineries Pvt Ltd., Lucknow have been selected as the private joint venture partners for this project, it stated
The press note further added that on September 14, a ceremony was held at the proposed location, Khatkati Road where it was attended by the DMC Chairman and its members, CEO of DMC and other dignitaries, along with the Chairman of Look East Construction Pvt. Ltd.
