Nagaland’s first woman development commissioner Temsunaro Aier retires

Kohima, April 2 (MExN): The Department of Planning and Transformation on Wednesday organised a formal farewell programme for retiring Development Commissioner Temsunaro Aier, IAS, at Hotel Japfu in Kohima.

In her farewell address, Aier expressed gratitude to her colleagues, staff and the Government of Nagaland for their support throughout her career, describing public service as a “true calling” rather than merely a profession.

Reflecting on her journey, she said her career was defined not by files and paperwork but by people, teamwork, challenges overcome and milestones achieved collectively.

She noted that the Department of Planning and Transformation had evolved significantly over the years and said she was proud to have contributed to its growth despite various challenges and uncertainties. She emphasised that success depended on collective commitment and a willingness to go the extra mile, adding that institutions are strengthened by values such as integrity, dedication and hard work.

Describing her tenure as diverse and enriching, Aier thanked the state government for placing its trust in her as Development Commissioner and urged officials to remain committed to the ideals of public service with clarity and resolve.

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary of the Planning and Transport Department P Nungsangwapang Jamir said the event marked the culmination of Aier’s illustrious 35 years of service to the state and its people.

He noted that Aier was the 29th Development Commissioner of Nagaland and the first and so far only woman to hold the post since statehood.

Jamir highlighted her long career across various roles, describing her as a dedicated and resilient officer. He said her retirement would leave a void, calling her a highly committed and efficient bureaucrat whose work ethic should inspire others.

Additional Development Commissioner Vilhouhunuo Sachu also lauded Aier’s leadership and mentorship, crediting her guidance for many of the department’s achievements.

She said Aier consistently encouraged and motivated colleagues and described her as a source of inspiration who led with strength and courage. Though her tenure as Development Commissioner was relatively brief, Sachu said her contributions were significant and impactful, helping the department reach new heights.

Several speakers from different departments and cells also paid tribute to Aier, highlighting her distinguished career and describing her as a transformative bureaucrat committed to public welfare. She was credited as a driving force behind initiatives such as the State Sync App and the Nagaland Institute of Transformation.

The programme was chaired by Deputy Development Commissioner Heinswading Liegise, while Deputy Development Commissioner B Chingmei Phom delivered the vote of thanks.

Aier began her career with the Government of Nagaland as an NCS officer in 1991 and was inducted into the Indian Administrative Service in 2022. She first served as Extra Assistant Commissioner, Kohima, in 1992 and later held key positions, including Managing Director of Samagra Shiksha and Commissioner and Secretary of Information and Public Relations, before serving as Development Commissioner.
