Nagaland's HSLC Standouts: GHS Saring & GHS Longjang maintain perfect streak

• GHS Unger and Yaongyimsen Compound follow closely
• 25 GHS with 100% pass percentage; 28 with ‘zero’ results

Two government high schools (GHS) under Mokokchung district, GHS Saring and GHS Longjang, have demonstrated exceptional consistency by sustaining a flawless 100% pass rate in the annual High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exams for 6 and 7 consecutive years, respectively.

The performance is doubly impressive as it is not a case of just one or two students sitting for the exams, but rather at least five students for both GHS Saring and GHS Longjang during the last 3-4 years.

Two other GHS in the district, namely GHS Yaongyimsen Compound and GHS Unger, have also achieved the 100% feat for 5 and 4 consecutive times respectively, as indicated by the results of the HSLC Examination 2024 declared by the Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) on April 26.

According to the exam results records available with The Morung Express, GHS Longjang has maintained the impeccable pass percentage record since 2018, while for Saring, this achievement began in 2019, coinciding with its apparent upgrade as a high school.

For GHS Yaongyimsen Compound, its near-perfect record from 2018 to 2024 was ‘blemished’ only by an 83% pass percentage in 2019.

Barring 2020 (25%), GHS Unger also maintained a perfect 100% record from 2018 to 2024. GHS Khar, another consistent performer, which achieved a hat-trick of centuries in 2023, had to settle for around 81% this year.

The sustained records of these GHSs demonstrate that their performance is not a one-off occurrence, but rather a consistent trend. Incidentally, the NBSE appeared to have discontinued the highlighting of schools with 100% and 0% pass percentage from 2024 in its overview of the results. Further, detailed district-wise abstracts were also missing from the “Result Gazette’ this year.

However, a preliminary analysis of the HSLC ‘Result Gazette’ indicated that GHS achieving 100% pass results declined slightly from 29 in 2023 to 25 in 2024.

However, GHS with 'zero/nil results' still remain a concerning issue with the number increasing from 25 in 2023 to 28 in 2024. Three private schools also showed zero qualified students taking the overall 'zero/nil results' to 31 in 2024.

However, contextualisation is crucial when interpreting the result data, particularly regarding GHS with 'zero' results, as often it involves one or two students attempting but failing to clear the exams. Likewise, even among those achieving a 100% pass rate, 7 GHS have a small number of students, ranging from 1 to 4.

Meanwhile, after showing its best performance in years at 49.13% in 2023, the overall past percentage of GHS declined to 48.55% in 2024.

As per the NBSE, out of the total of 22,136 candidates who appeared for the HSLC 2024 examination, 15,588 candidates successfully qualified, resulting in a qualification percentage of 71.87%. This achievement marks the highest qualification rate in the past decade, if not in all previous examinations.

In class 12 exams, Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Naginimora (Arts), GHSS  Chümoukedima (Arts)  and Rüzhükhrie GHHS  (Commerce) secured 100% pass percentage.
