Dimapur, February 15 (MExN): SC Jamir, Governor of Goa said Nagas belonging to various different tribes and fiercely tribalistic, can learn a lot from the Swiss who are also sharply divided into 23 Cantons, each independent in their own rights, but remain amazingly united.
Interacting with the Swiss Consul General in Mumbai Peter E. Specker who paid a courtesy call on him this morning, Jamir said the Confederation of Switzerland is quite unique and that the people of the different Cantons are similar with the different Naga tribes in many ways. This was stated in a press note issued by Sebastian Zumvu, OSD to Governor of Goa. It was a nostalgic moment for Jamir when he recalled his one-month stay in Geneva in the early 1960s when he was the Deputy Minister at the Centre and when he led the Indian delegation to the International Labour Organisation at Geneva.
The Swiss diplomat, who was earlier posted in Ecuador, Mexico, Brazil and the United States, has been posted to Mumbai last year and is visiting Goa for the first time. He pointed out that the Swiss Mumbai Consulate is the largest and most important after the Hongkong Consulate in Asia.
He also pointed out that Switzerland was the first country in the world which signed a friendship treaty with India in 1948 and that the two countries are celebrating its 60th year of friendship.
He hoped that the friendship would continue and extend into other fields of cooperation which would be mutually beneficial to the two countries. He was of the opinion that Switzerland and India can collaborate in the fields of education, tourism and health care.
Later in the day, Jamir also interacted with 22 foreign diplomats from 20 Asian, African, Latin American and Eastern European countries.
The diplomats are visiting the UGC Centre for Latin American and International Studies at Goa University, of which the Governor is the Chancellor, as part of the Programme of the Foreign Service Institute of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India.
