Nagas should go beyond state as missionaries: Karen Lafferty

Karen Lafferty presented her book ‘Seek ye First, The Karen Lafferty story’ to DPRO Wokha, Lolano Patton on February 15.

Kohima, February 17 (MExN): Karen Lafferty, the renowned American Christian musician and composer of the global praise song ‘Seek Ye First’, concluded a meaningful visit to Nagaland recently, during which she engaged with various church congregations and ministries across the state.

The 78-year-old composer and missionary arrived in Nagaland on February 8. During her visit to Kohima, Lafferty addressed believers at three different churches, urging them to remain steadfast in their faith, stated a DIPR report.

Drawing from her iconic song, she reminded to “Seek God first” in all aspects of life. She also shared her personal testimony and motivated young people to dedicate time to missionary work and the propagation of the Gospel.

During her stay in the state capital, Lafferty spent two days at the Freedom Ministry in Kohima, where she met her spiritual daughter, Atsu Solo, along with her family. In a lighter moment, she also joined the Bikers Ministry for a short ride.

On February 15, upon her arrival in Dimapur, Lafferty visited the residence of Lolano Patton, District Public Relations Officer of Wokha. Over lunch, she shared the inspiration behind her iconic song, ‘Seek Ye First’, which is based on the Bible verse Matthew 6:33.

Lafferty expressed deep appreciation for the Naga people, praising their simplicity, warmth, and hospitality. She remarked that their characteristics reminded her of native communities in parts of America. Observing that Nagaland is a predominantly Christian state, she encouraged more young people from the region to venture beyond the state as missionaries. “Nagas grow up in Christian homes and have heard the Gospel from an early age, which equips them well to share their faith,” she noted.

Before her departure, Lafferty presented the host with a copy of her autobiography, Seek Ye First: The Karen Lafferty Story.

Written in 1971, ‘Seek Ye First’ has become a staple in praise and worship across denominations worldwide. Over the decades, Lafferty has travelled extensively, leading worship and supporting mission work in numerous countries.

Despite her age, she remains active in her ministry and expressed her desire to continue serving the Lord by starting a Prayer ministry. “So long as I am physically able, I will definitely visit Nagaland again,” she assured.
