A five day long 63rd sports  meet of Northern Angami Sports Association ( NASA) kicked off today at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima.

Gracing the inaugural function as the special guest, Abu Metha, Advisor to Chief Minister Nagaland and vice president, Athletics Federation of India subscribed that sport unifies and brings people closer under a spirit of unity.

He maintained that sports events like the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup bring together more nations and countries than any other event.

Sports is also amongst the most watched human activities on all platforms. Sporting careers are natural respect, honour, gainful careers and high earning and there are no shortcuts in sports.

There is only one way to succeed in sports and that is hard work and more hard work, he said.

If athletes want to be champions they have to sweat the extra bucket and run the extra mile, Metha said.

Sport celebrates the human spirit, it exemplifies the energy and ambition of humanity’s youth.

He urged the sports associations and administrators to invest more money on coaching and training of the young talents instead of high expenditures on ceremonies and functions.

“With right training and coaching backed with exposure and good infrastructure there is no reason why Nagas cannot become world and Olympic champions,” he said.

He recalled how he had led the Indian team to the world championships in Kenya where the Indian team won its best haul of 4 medals under his leadership.

He thanked the sports fraternity and the entire Naga society for the support and solidarity which ensured his presence at the highest level of sports administration in the country and enabled him to serve the state and the country amongst the international community.

Earlier, a welcome address was delivered by NASA, president, Vinolie Medom while NASA athletics secretary, Visielie Sanchu administered the oath to the participating teams.
The meet will continue till February 5.
