The 30th games and sports event of Northern Angami Sports Association (Group-D) got underway at Botsa in Kohima district with Abu Metha, Associate Vice President, Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and Advisor to Chief Minister as the special guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Metha encouraged the youth to take sports as their career.
‘Nagas have the potential to become a champion, it is our aim and ambition that Nagas too become world champion’, he said.
He urged the sports person to acquire the determination and the mental strength to excel in its own discipline and to work hard, to give the best to bring name and glory to our people and to the state.
Saying that sports is a very lucrative career. He, however pointed out that there are no shortcuts, no backdoor appointments in sports.
"You can excel in sports, become a champion only through hard work, discipline and then hard work & hard work only," he said.
'Those were the day's people played games and sports just for time pass, fitness, hobbies and recreational. However, in modern times in today's world, games and sports became a professional and most recognized profession,' he maintained.
Metha suggested the sports association's to give more attention to the development of sports through selecting and bringing together the best players in one platform and give them intensive training by the best coaches, sending them to exposure trips, and let them participate in a tournament.
Sharing his opinion to the sports organizers, Metha suggested that instead of organizing only sports and tournament, he told them to give their best resources to develop sports by identifying the best sports person in their respective areas and bring together in one platform and give them intensive training by the best coaches, sending them to exposure trips, and let them participate in a tournament so that the areas can produce national and international player and then can participate in Olympic games.
He said the Olympic Games brings more countries together under one platform than any other human activity on earth.
Games and sports are the most watched activities in the world, he said.
To become a successful sportsperson one need hard work, determination and dedication, also the foundations of sports need to be strengthened with good infrastructure to support the sporting activities, Metha said.
The inaugural programme was chaired by Kezhangulie Kire, general secretary, NASA-D while presidential address was delivered by Kevilezo Kense, president, NASA-D.
