PUNGRO, JULY 13 (MExN): The Fishery Union Pungro Sub-division (FUPSD), in collaboration with the District Fishery Office (DFO) Kiphire, District Horticulture Office (DHO) Kiphire, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Office Pungro, and the Sub-Division Agriculture Department, organised National Fish Farmers’ Day-cum-Integrated Farming System (IFS) training at Pungro town on July 10.

The programme aimed to promote sustainable agriculture and fisheries practices through integrated farming systems, combining crop production, livestock farming, and aquaculture to enhance productivity and livelihoods, officials said.

District Fishery Officer Kiphire, Nzanthung T Yanthan; District Horticulture Officer Kiphire, Senti Longchar; Inspector, SDAO Office Pungro, Omega; and Senior VFA Pungro, Yochong, attended the programme as resource persons.

Experts from different departments also spoke on modern agricultural techniques, soil health management, and water conservation. The event fostered partnerships among stakeholders including government departments, fish farmers, and agricultural experts.

Along with the rest of the country, Pungro Sub-division also observed National Fish Farmers’ Day in honour of pioneers Professor Dr Hiralal Chaudhury and Dr K H Alikunhi, who introduced induced breeding in Indian major carps.

The celebration highlighted the importance of sustainable aquaculture practices in contributing to India’s blue economy vision and recognised the vital role of fish farmers in ensuring food security, employment generation, and economic growth.

The programme was chaired by FUPSD General Secretary H. Hanso, while the keynote address was delivered by FUPSD President Azikiu Abraham, the organisers added.
