National Lok Adalat in all district hqs on September 14

KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 10 (MExN): Along with the rest of the nation, the 3rd quarterly National Lok Adalat (People’s Courts) for the year 2024 will be observed in all the district headquarters under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) on September 14.

11 Lok Adalat Benches by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSAs) will be set-up, a press release issued by Victo Sema, NSLSA Member Secretary informed on Tuesday.

Lok Adalat is one of the alternative dispute redressal mechanisms, and a forum where disputes/cases pending in the court of law or at pre-litigation stage are settled/ compromised amicably. Lok Adalats have been given statutory status under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.

Under the said Act, the award (decision) made by the Lok Adalats is deemed to be a decree of a civil court and is final and binding on all parties and no appeal against such an award lies before any court of law.

There is no court fee payable when a matter is filed in a Lok Adalat. If a matter pending in the court of law is referred to the Lok Adalat and is settled subsequently, the court fee originally paid in the court on the complaints/petition is also refunded back to the parties.

During the 2nd quarter of the National Lok Adalat held on May 11, a total of 223 cases out of 463 cases at pre litigation and pending stage were settled and disposed off. The total settlement amount involved was Rs 3,17,44,81. The cases disposed off pertained to civil cases including Bank recovery, telephone bills, MACT cases among others.

The disposal data of each DLSAs will be further uploaded on the web portal of the state authority at nslsa.nagalandgov.in.
