A three-day national seminar on “Impact of Commercialization and Communalization of Education in Naga Society” organized by All India Forum for Right to Education (AIFRTE) and hosted by Patkai Christian College (PCC), Seithekiema, Chumukedima is underway at PCC with a host of resource persons from within the state and outside.
In the first session on Friday, Prof Madhu Prasad, Member, Presidium, AIFRTE, formerly at DU said that communalization in the education system was an attempt to impose a particular religious ideology upon other members of the society. She also pointed out that various states were trying to withdraw its commitment from education and “encouraging privatization but this is no longer philanthropic.” She said when education is commercialized and handed over to corporates, it becomes an activity that generates interest for investors. “Today, the idea of education is shifting to something that is beneficial to individuals,” she noted.
Stating that education was not a commodity, Prof Prasad said that the purpose of education needs to have an intrinsic value.
The seminar was attended by students, lecturers and academicians from various departments of Nagaland University besides invitees from other states.
