Kiphire, February 26 (MExN): An awareness programme and sanitation drive under the SBI Sanjeevani – Clinic on Wheels initiative of Nature SBI Foundation Nagaland, organised as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, was held at Pongren village in Kiphire district on Thursday.

The programme was chaired by Pikhumla, Staff Nurse, Nature SBI Foundation, Kiphire. It began with an invocation prayer by the pastor of Pongren Village Baptist Church, who sought blessings for the health and well-being of the people and the success of the initiative.

The chairman of Pongren Village Council delivered the welcome address and expressed gratitude to Nature SBI Foundation Nagaland for organising the health camp and related activities. He said the team has been visiting the village regularly and that their services have greatly benefited the residents. He also thanked the foundation for distributing useful materials to the community.

As part of the cleanliness drive under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, materials were distributed to the villagers by Irothe T Sangtam, president of the Longmatra Area Students’ Union, to promote hygiene and sanitation practices.

A special awareness session on the importance of waste management was conducted by Longtili C Sangtam, Project Lead, Nature SBI Foundation Nagaland. He explained that proper waste management involves the safe collection, handling and disposal of waste to maintain a clean and healthy environment.

He emphasised the need to segregate waste into wet waste, dry waste and hazardous waste, and encouraged villagers to use dustbins instead of disposing of waste in open areas.

Highlighting the significance of the 3Rs principle — Reduce, Reuse and Recycle — he said organic waste can be converted into compost for agricultural use, while plastic waste, which harms animals and the environment, should be minimised.

He further stated that effective waste management helps prevent diseases and safeguards public health. Urging collective responsibility, he called on villagers to maintain cleanliness in their homes and surroundings, noting that clean surroundings contribute to a healthy and beautiful community.
