Nagaland Building & Other Construction Workers (NBOCW) Welfare Board conducted awareness campaign on building and other construction workers at Hopongkyü Memorial Hall, Kiphire town on June 6. It was graced by T Yangseo Sangtam, Dy Speaker NLA and also attended by NBOCW Welfare Board, Chairman Dr Kekhrie Yhome.

Addressing the participants, MLA Yangseo Sangtam urged to cease the opportunity, enrol and spread the information to other participants at village level. He encouraged to disseminate the information so that deserving beneficiaries can avail the opportunity provided by the government for the overall economic growth of society and uplift living conditions of construction workers.

Stressing on the importance and benefits of getting enrol under NBOCW Welfare Board, he stated that upto two children of those enrolled workers are provided with the scholarship in high school for which he asked the participants to avail the facility by getting themselves registered.

Referring to data, Yangseo pointed out that after pandemic hundreds of youths from Kiphire who were working outside have returned “creating unemployment problem in the district” which needs to be properly addressed. He said that skills and talents that the youths possess can be constructively used to enable the youths to stand on their own feet and provide them the purchasing power which will help and improve economy in the district. 

“NBOCW Welfare Board is one such body that can effectively help in skilling the unskilled workers for which he encouraged the participants to make full use of the opportunity as today government job was at saturation point,” he stated.

Calling for change in work culture among the Nagas, the MLA said, “Today if we want to improve our living standards and economy, we should be willing to take up any job in any sector as government cannot provide job to everybody.”

Yangseo informed that after becoming MLA within a span of 1 year, he has constructed four roads in the district as road was extremely vital for the growth, progress and economy of the district.

Encouraging the participants and gathering to avail the benefit of ‘Aspirational District,’ he expressed optimism that awareness programme such as this will open the eyes of the people of Kiphire for availing and understanding various government programme and policy that the government is providing.

Delivering a short speech, NBOCW Welfare Board, Chairman, Dr Kekhrie Yhome assured the gathering that whatever can be done under the board will be carried out in collaboration with the stakeholders for the benefit of the construction workers. 

Highlighting the activities of the board, he informed that it look after welfare of all construction workers in villages and towns across Nagaland, totalling 1280 recognised village and 75 unrecognised villages, irrespective of any type of construction activities by maintaining the data of construction workers area of speciality so that their services can be use when required.

Stating that awareness programme was organised in Kiphire by giving special emphasis as number of enrolled participants was very less in Kiphire, Dr Kekhrie encouraged more participants to enrol and avail all those benefits that are entitled to the beneficiaries.

Pointing out that Kohima and Dimapur has the highest number of enrolment’ he said, ‘proper screening will be done to identify genuine workers so that those not entitled will be barred from availing any benefit as most of the time those not deserving get the opportunity while leaving out the genuine ones.’

In order to cover every district, NBOCW Welfare Board has started a quota system to ensure every district is covered for which, the board chairman assured that those enrolled participants who are left out this year will be included in the coming year so that benefit is equally shared. 

Seeking cooperation from administration, civil society and tribal leaders even in the coming days he said since Kiphire is a big district similar programme will be organised in Kiphire, Pungro and Seyochung. 

Giving his remark, D Robin NCS, ADC Kiphire said the awareness programme will surely help the people of Kiphire both in terms of skilling the unskilled and uplifting the economy of Kiphire. “As government service is almost exhausted we should not only focus on getting government jobs but also focus on generating employment through self employment,” he stated. The ADC assured that district administration will work hand in hand with all the stakeholders for the progress and growth of Kiphire.

The programme was chaired by T Chubayanger, CEO, NBOCW Welfare Board and welcome address by Thritongse Sangtam, President 60 A/C followed by distribution of publicity material and interaction and registration of participants.
