NBSE Results: Govt Schools improve but concerns remain

The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE), on May 8, declared the results of the 2017 High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) Examinations which commenced from February  14 this year.  

Best result since 2009

Overall, out of 22446 candidates, 15754 passed the HSLC Examination 2017 and despite turmoil in the State during the exam period, the pass percentage was one of the highest in recent years with 70.19% qualifying the examination, an improvement by over 7% when compared to the last year’s pass percentage of 65.42%. The last time the pass percentage crossed 70% or above was in the year 2009, NBSE informed.  

Impressively, 72 schools secured 100% pass percentage, up by five in 2016, out of which, six were government schools.  

A total of 944 candidates secured 80% and above, up by 30 from 2016’s results, out of which 13 were from government schools.  

HSSLC examination overview

The pass percentage in HSSLC examination also increased from 75.15% in 2016 to 78.39% in 2017. The pass percentages in Arts, Commerce and Science were 82.97%, 79.60% and 91.03% respectively.  

A total of 271 candidates secured 80% and above, in aggregate up by 57 from 2016. While 11 institutions under Arts stream, four institutions under Science stream and four institutions under Commerce stream secured 100% pass result; one private institution of commerce stream got ‘zero’ result.  
 

Girls retain edge

As usual, female candidates have retained their edge over their male counterparts in almost all categories in both HSLC and HSSLC examination.  

In Class X exam, 8178 girls qualified against 7576 boys. In the Top 20 list, out of 45 candidates, only 13 are boys.  

The girls trumped over the boys once again in HSSLC with 82.21% and 74.58% pass percentage respectively in overall performance. The top 10 lists for Arts, Commerce and Science streams in HSSLC were evenly poised, with 17 boys and 16 girls featuring on them in all.  

Have government schools improved?

HSLC examination results in government schools of Nagaland State showed a marked improvement giving their best performance in the past six years but other concerns remain.  

According to the NBSE overview of the results, the pass percentage in Government Schools in HSLC increased from 32.81% in 2016 to 42.60% in 2017, an increase by over 29%. However, the number of schools with zero pass percentage remains the same at 30 this year. Two private schools also gave ‘zero’ pass percentage in 2017.  

In terms of district wise performance for government schools, Kohima district topped the table with a pass percentage of 57% followed by Mokokchung district at 51%. The lowest pass percentage was in Longleng district at 7%.  

Among the private schools, Kohima and Phek districts are at the top with a percentage of 86% followed by Mokokchung at 85%. Tuensang was at the bottom at 14.07 pass percentage among private institutions.
