A training programme under the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme (YAMS) initiative was conducted at the NCC training camp in Wokha on Tuesday with the objective of equipping National Cadet Corps (NCC) volunteers with essential disaster response skills.

The programme is being organised by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) in collaboration with the Home Guards & Civil Defence (HG&CD), Wokha, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

A total of 700 cadets are scheduled to undergo training in two batches — the first from July 15 to 24 and the second from July 26 to August 4. Cadets from eight districts are participating in the training.

During Tuesday’s session, key disaster management modules were imparted. Echung Konyak S., Company Commander, conducted sessions on the basic concept of disaster management and community-based first aid. Bleeding control and wound care were covered through both instructional and practical sessions led by Sub-Inspector Mhonyamo and SDRF instructors, respectively.

Three Yuva Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) under NSDMA are serving as resource persons for the programme to ensure the quality and standardisation of training content.

In the days ahead, cadets will be trained in various life-saving and emergency management techniques, including musculoskeletal injuries and splinting, basic life support, earthquake and landslide response, lifting and moving of casualties, fire and fire safety measures, types and uses of fire extinguishers, rope rescue techniques, knot tying and lashing, construction of picket, holding denrick, sheer and gyn, flood and water disaster response, use of life jackets, lifelines, life buoys (dry and wet rescue), construction of rafts and improvised flooding techniques, swimming techniques with improvised aids, OBM (Outboard Motor) familiarisation, commands for boat rowing and types of boat paddling, and outdoor flood rescue exercises involving OBMs, rafts and swimming aids.

Additionally, a combined service class will be conducted for YAMS participants and cadets of the Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC-68).
