Dimapur, June 29 (MExN): The Naga Council Dimapur today stated that it looks forward to cooperation of Dimapur citizens and the newly elected Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) and East Dimapur Town Council (EDTC) members to bring tangible development and progress in the district.
To this end, on behalf of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), the NCD congratulated all the elected DMC and EDTC members and extended their full support and cooperation for the development of the district and for maintaining harmonious peaceful coexistence among the citizens.
This is needed to change the face of Dimapur as it is the index of Nagaland State, implied a press release from the NCD President Etsungmomo Kikon and General Secretary LK Peter Anal.
Meanwhile, it noted that citizens had waited enthusiastically for the past 20 years to participate in the urban local bodies (ULBs) polls the moment the State Election Commission (SEC) announced the election programme.
There were a lot of apprehensions and assumptions with a few unavoidable stray incidents and verbal arguments among various parties at the initial stage, however, the ULBs elections with 33% woman reservation was a historic and remarkable electoral event, it added.
To buttress the same, the NCD highlighted that a new era was created for women representation in the policymaking body in the State and gave the opportunity to elect efficient women candidates having leadership qualities to shape the new generation societies.
It also maintained that most of the polling stations for the first time upheld the ‘one person one vote’ principle, mandatory for democratic elections to choose the rightful leaders and termed it as a fulfilment of “clean election” needed in any form of democratic elections.
It also claimed that youth did not interfere with the ULBs polls and gave full liberty to the genuine voters to exercise their franchise.
Accordingly, the present elected DMC and EDTC members have full public mandate, it added.
The Council also noted that many young aspirants were elected signifying drive for development and progress for change in the society.
The polls were carried out peacefully with well coordination among the police department and district administration as well as citizens, it said, and lauded the systematic and professional management of the polling stations and the situations by the security personnel.
Hence, the NCD commended the law enforcing agencies and district administrations for giving their best efforts with utmost precautionary measures right from the initial stage for peaceful ULBs elections.
It expressed gratitude to the Commissioner of Police Kevithuto Sophie IPS and Dr Tinojongshi Chang, Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, under whose ‘strategic planning and supervision, the polls went off peacefully. The NCD also expressed appreciation to all ranks and files of the police and district administration departments.
The Council also acknowledged W Manpai Phom, DMC Administrator and Returning Officer, and polling staff for well-arranged and management of the ULBs elections.
The wholehearted cooperation of GBs, Colony Chairmen, DUCCF, GB Union Dimapur, NWHD, DNSU, CSOs and all the communities residents of wards were also appreciated for maintaining the democratic principle of ‘one person, one vote.’
