DIMAPUR, APRIL 22 (MExN): The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has proposed to give a face-lift to the Old Naga Cemetery located at Lake View Colony, Kher Mahal, Dimapur.
The old Naga Cemetery which has been in use for more than 40 years has run out of space and is now closed, a press note from the NCD said. It informed that the management by NCD involves the allocation of land for burials and the maintenance of the grounds and landscaping. However it stated that maintenance of tombstone and other grave monuments is usually the private responsibility of families of the deceased.
“The cemetery site is densely outgrown by grasses and weeds and maintenance becomes labour intensive. In the past they were cleared and maintained voluntarily by the Pastor Fellowship Dimapur and other voluntary organizations. The management now wishes to plaster with concrete the entire spaces between every tomb,” the NCD informed.
It further stated that some families of the deceased have put iron railings around the tomb "which will cause inconvenience while carrying out concrete plastering.” The NCD therefore asked that such structures be removed before April 24, failing which it will be removed by the council.
The NCD while appreciating those bodies who have contributed in keeping the cemetery maintained, has appealed to various bodies and institutions to come forward to contribute to beautify the cemetery into a “well maintained and a more attractive one.”
