NCD supports call for amendment of Nagaland Municipal Act 2001

DIMAPUR, MARCH 23 (MExN): The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has extended support to the call for amendment of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001.

A press release from the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) President, Etsungmomo Kikon; General Secretary, LK Anal Peter; and Vice President (Admin), Holuto Aye said that it firmly supports the resolutions adopted by the Associations of Dimapur Urban Council Chairman Federation (DUCCF), Association of Kohima Municipal Ward Panchayat (AKMWP), All Ward Union Mokokchung Town (AWUMT) and the Town Councils of various districts of Nagaland at the meeting held on March 22.

The three organizations had submitted a representation to the State Government urging the government to review/ revamp or redraft the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001.

“However, in-spite of sincere attempts made by the various Urban Local Bodies, Tribal bodies to protect and safeguard the rights of the Nagas as enshrined in Article 371(A), of the Indian Constitution, the issue of amendment of the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 in regard to tax on land and buildings has not been resolved rather dragging the issue for a long time,” the NCD claimed.

Further, it stated that the issue is “becoming very sensitive and emotional which may re-occur situations as in the past.”

The NCD appealed to the State Government to once again convene a consultative meeting inviting all stakeholders and settle once and for all so as to hold the ULB election in time as notified.
