Chennai, February 24 (MExN): Matrubhasa Divas was celebrated in Chennai on February 22 in observance of International Mother Language Day, highlighting India’s linguistic diversity.

The programme was inaugurated by Wapangtoshi, President of the North East India Welfare Association Chennai and Pastor of the Naga Christian Fellowship Chennai.

Speaking on the occasion, Wapangtoshi said, “India is a country that cannot be confined to a single identity. It is not limited by one language, one culture, one religion, or one political ideology. Instead, India exemplifies unity in diversity — a testament to how differences can coexist peacefully. Its true strength lies in embracing these differences while remaining united as one nation. India is not a single story but a collection of countless stories woven together into one vibrant and extraordinary country.”

The event was organised by Bharat Bharati Tamil Nadu at Agarwal Vidyalaya, Chennai. Representatives from 22 states participated in the programme, showcasing their cultural heritage through performances in their respective mother languages.

An Ao-Naga song from Nagaland was presented by Akumpong Jamir during the programme.

The theme of the programme, “Language, Attire, Devotion, Food, Travel,” highlighted different facets of Indian culture.
