NCSU asks PWD to split road works to allow local contractors to apply

Kohima, October 8 (MExN): The Nagaland Contractors’ & Suppliers’ Union (NCSU) has termed the criteria laid down in the latest Notice Inviting Tender (NIT) floated by the Government of Nagaland on October 2 as “harsh, complicated and not applicable” to local Class 1 registered contractors who will not qualify for the works.

The NCSU urged the Department to “review the present criteria in the NIT and thereby split up the works into road-wise at the earliest, for the interest of contractors in general.”

This was stated in a representation from the NCSU to Nagaland’s Minister for Roads & Bridges.

“Earlier, the Department (PWD, R&B) used to split up the construction works in Km- wise so as to enable the local contractors to get such works. However, the present criteria in the NIT has put hurdles that hardly one or two local contractors would qualify for the works and the rest of the Government registered Class-1 contractors including those from ENPO areas would not get any work as per the advertisement made by the department,” noted the representation from NCSU President, Pele Khezhie, and General Secretary, John Kath.

The NCSU noted that the works under SARDP phase-1 were four projects clubbed together into one package and allotted to M/s. Mayatas & Gayatri (JV) in 2014, “in spite of our repeated demand made to the State Government, Central Government to split the works into job-wise and to allot it to local contractors.”

With the demand of the contractors and suppliers not met, the project also resulted in “total failure” and “not a single road could be completed by them till today.”
