NDPP ‘aghast’ by RPP’s plea for President’s Rule

Says ‘baseless, misleading' allegations cannot warrant invoking Article 365 of Indian Constitution

DIMAPUR, MAY 13 (MExN): The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) today said that it is aghast that the Rising Peoples’ Party (RPP), a political party registered with the Election Commission of India (ECI), would demand for the dismissal of a popularly elected Government “which goes against the very fabrics of democracy.”

A press release from the NDPP media and communication centre said that the RPP has leveled several “unfounded allegations” against the democratically elected Government in their demand for the imposition of Presidents Rule in the State which are “baseless, misleading and cannot warrant invoking Article 365 of the Constitution of India.”

“The Constitution of India, on which the very fabrics of democracy of this great nation are enshrined in, cannot be treated in such a flippant manner. Simply raising allegations of corruption and non disbursement of salaries are not reasons enough to invite invoking Article 365 of the Constitution of India,” the NDPP stated.

It noted that the RPP alleged the present United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Government, an opposition-less government is an undemocratic one. “Nowhere in the Constitution of India does it say that an opposition-less government/house is illegal or not permissible,” the NDPP said.

“The members of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) are neither self styled leaders nor have they forced themselves to sit in the house of the people. They have been democratically elected by their respective constituents to represent them in the people’s house for the duration of this house,” it added.

The NDPP said that the demand for the dissolution of the 13th NLA and for the imposition of President’s Rule in the State is therefore “against the very tenets of a democracy and is in fact an insult to not only the esteemed office of the Governor of Nagaland but also a complete disregard and disrespect of the Constitution of India and the people of Nagaland who have democratically reposed and elected these very leaders of the 13th NLA to represent them for five years.”

The NDPP meanwhile affirmed that it stands committed in “our promise of transparency, accountability, meritocracy and good governance.” It said that the party would not waver in its commitments to the people of the State by succumbing to “baseless and misleading allegations of our opponents and detractors.” It further appealed to the people to continue their support to the party and the government “which has remained unwavering over the last more than four years.”
