KOHIMA, JUNE 13 (MExN): In a stark departure from taciturn positioning on issues of minorities, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) appealed the Narendra Modi-led NDA government to protect the interests of minority communities and religions.
The NDPP and its Parliamentary Party had a joint seating on June 12 in Kohima where a number of resolutions with regard to the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections and the formation of the Political Affairs Committee.
While it congratulated the Prime Minister, NArendra Modi and the NDA for its “comprehensive victory” to form the government a third consecutive time, it also made a “strong” appeal that “the interest of the weaker sections, minorities as well as all religions must and should be protected to ensure secularism and equality for all under the Constitution of India.”
The NDPP also put on record its respect for the mandate of the people of Nagaland in the Lok Sabha elections.
“This has been a humbling experience and the House accepts this mandate in all humility, while at the same time congratulates S Supongmeren Jamir, the new Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) and exudes hope that he will carry forward the voice of the Nagas in the House of the people without malice or favor,” it stated.
It further resolved that the recent mandate of the people will motivate the Party and the Legislators to introspect, take corrective measures and continue to pursue its constitution, commitments and manifesto towards serving the people of the State.
The NDPP congratulated the Election Commission of India, State Election Commission, the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police and the entire State machinery, all central Paramilitary forces and the people of Nagaland for having once again conducted a successful and peaceful election.
It also welcomed the decision of the State Government in forming the Political Affairs Committee at the Government level and the Political Consultative Committee at the level of the political parties. While reaffirming its sincerity towards the early resolution of the Indo-Naga Political issue, it reiterated its stand as committed in the party manifesto, to facilitate the ongoing political negotiations and pave the way for a political settlement that is inclusive and acceptable to the people.
The NDPP assured the people of Nagaland that despite whatever the outcome has been, it will continue to stand committed and work for the welfare of the people as enshrined in our manifesto and constitution. The House further called upon the people of the State to once again come forward in supporting the efforts of the Government by participating and ensuring the successful conduct of the elections to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
The House unanimously resolved to reiterate and reaffirm its support and confidence upon the leaderships of the Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio and Party President, Chingwang Konyak in its collective endeavor to serve the citizens of the State.
