Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) President Chingwang Konyak on Saturday said that while he is personally not in favour of “NDPP Party merger with any other political party,” he would not let his “personal feelings override the majority decision of the NDPP Party General Convention.”

Speaking at the 6th and final General Convention of the NDPP at Capital Cultural Hall, Kohima, Konyak emphasised that the party's greatest strength lies in its “unity and discipline.”

He urged party members to “rise above personal feelings and ambitions and remain dedicated to our collective goal - the progress and peace in Nagaland.”

“Let us together move forward in harmony and with shared determination, and take decision unanimously for the merger of the NDPP Party, in the larger interest of our people,” he said.

Konyak said that in 2017, Nagaland has been crying out for stability, strong leadership and policies that will change the destiny of the State in a positive manner, and needs a New Regional Political Party and thus NDPP was formed on May 17, 2017, inspired by shared belief that Nagaland destiny must be shaped by its own people, guided by the principle of “Deeds, Not Words.”

The NDPP has been actively and positively participating in all national level programmes for recognized and represented parties conducted under the aegis of the Election Commission of India, he said.

“Today, we have 83,591 Active members and 1,68,401 Primary members enrolled in the Party. Total memberships of the Party, both Active and Primary Memberships is 2,51,992,” he said.

He said that on September 12, 2025, the NDPP Central Executive Board and its meeting, had discussed the Resolution adopted by the Central Executive Council (CEC) of the Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) and the letter of offer by the Secretary General of the NPF addressed to the President of the NDPP, and the CEB decided to call a General Convention of NDPP according to the prescribed constitutional provisions to take final decision, and therefore, this General Convention of the NDPP is being convened to decide by the Active members of the NDPP, as per provision in the Article-X of the NDPP Constitution, the future of NDPP Party.

‘Well thought out and strategic move’

Y Vikheho Swu, president NDPP Agri & Allied Organization said “Our gathering today is not the end, but a beginning of a renewed journey. “I believe the decision to merge the two regional parties is a well thought out and strategic move, he said commended the wisdom of Dr. Neiphiu Rio and party president Chingwang Konyak and other senior party functionaries who has shown great courage and foresight in taking this bold step.

“I am confident that this merger will go a long way in creating a strong regional party which is so much needed by us at this crucial time,” Swu said.

He said that a strong regional party is what we need in this present political scenario and it is always wise to adapt and change with the evolving times.

With this initiative of joining the two regional parties, we are creating a strong united regional party that can stand against any outside force that might be a threat to our existence, he said.

Swu also asked all NDPP party workers not to be disheartened but “to adapt ourselves and to positively respond to this call of a strong regional party that will in the long run benefit all of us.”
