NE Girls U-19 Tournament: Mizoram to meet Sikkim in final

Kohima, July 20 (MExN): Sikkim XI and Mizoram XI are poised for a final showdown at the ongoing North East Girls’ U-19 Football Tournament after they won their respective semi-final matches on Saturday at the IG Stadium, Kohima.


In the first semi-final match on July 20, Sikkim XI trumped over Manipur XI with a 2-1 win, with Laxmi finding the net twice to take her team into the finals.


Manipur struck early through Kipgen in the 33rdminute but could not hold on to the advantage as Sikkim fought back and managed level the score in the 73rd minute. The match went into extra time and Laxmi scored the golden goal to pave way for her team into the finals.


In the second semi-final, Mizoram XI defeated Assam XI 3-2 as the fortune of both teams swing back and forth throughout the match.


Luangi from Mizoram gave her team an early lead by scoring in the 7th minute. However, Assam XI came back strongly scoring back-to-back goals in the 33rd and 35th minutes.


With better coordination and attacking, the Mizoram team, however, managed cut out Assam’s advantage in the 49th minute and scored again in the 73rd minute to book a place in the finals.


Sikkim XI will take on Mizoram XI in the final match on July 21, 2.30 pm at IG Stadium, Kohima.


Meanwhile, the Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya extended an invitation to the players, support staff and officers of IGAR (N) to Raj Bhavan on 20 July and interacted with them.


Acharya encouraged the budding players to utilize the medium of sports for overall growth and for furthering the spirit of integration, informed a press release from the PRO, HQ IGAR (N), Lt Col L Vincent Patton.


He also lauded the initiative of the Assam Rifles for organising the first of its kind tournament for young girl footballers from the North East, it said.
