NHHDCL organises National Handloom Expo in New Delhi
New Delhi, February 7 (MExN): National Handloom Expo organised by the Nagaland Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd (a Government of Nagaland undertaking) was inaugurated by Dr M Beena, IAS, Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, at Handloom Haat, Janpath, New Delhi on February 7.
In a press release PRO Nagaland House, New Delhi stated that Dr M Beena, IAS expressed her happiness in the visibility that NE handlooms are gaining which, she added, is rightly deserved. She stated that weavers who come to the Handloom Haat, about 60% of them are from NE and that such handloom expo is to give the weavers an understanding of what the market and consumers are looking for and help the weaversto cater to the choice of customers.
Stating the materials produced in NE has a lot of export potential Dr Beena encouraged corporations, such as Nagaland Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd (NHHDCL) to engage more with the Handloom Export Promotion Council, so as to increase exports internationally.
Dr Beena stated that it is the right opportunity for the NE to come and showcase their handloom before the world andexpressed confidence in the potential of handloom in the international market and said that we are in an era of ‘slow fashion,’ as consumers become more conscious of ethical and responsible fashion and with the handloom industry producing less carbon footprint, it can be a premium section in the international market.
Prasielie Pienyu, Chairman, NHHDCL, Dimapur thanked the Office of the Development Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India for sponsoring the National Handloom Expo and expressed hope that more such national expos will be held in the future as well.
Wennyei Konyak, Resident Commissioner, Nagaland House New Delhi; Er Y LipongseThongtsar, Managing Director NHHDCL, officials from Ministry of Textiles, GoI, NHHDCL Dimapur and Nagaland House, New Delhi were among those present during the inaugural function. Altogether 80 stalls are set up and the expo will be open till February 19.
