NE People Issue

The issue on ‘Racial profiling’, Discrimination and Harassment of North Easterners, have seized Delhi Govt. and Delhi High Court. The N.E. State Govts have also grown gravely concerned, ever since the mass evacuation exodus of N.E. persons from the mainland last year. The Raj Bhavan Kohima, then occupied by the former Rtd. Commissioner of Delhi Police, Nikhil Kumar would have records of letters written to Delhi.Letters from Chief Ministers and Chief Secretaries of N.E. States over the event are also available.

At this juncture, it is impelling upon everyone to discover a lasting solution, through appropriate measures. The Delhi High Court’s Order to Delhi Police on measures to act, are apt and should be on a sustained mode. Correspondingly and reciprocally the N.E. States should promulgate similar measures. Social and human relations are mutual and one sided reform will not obliterate attitudes.

The miniscule populace of N.E. States must be oriented and sensitized while venturing into the myriad society of the second highest population of the world. “Do as Roman’s Do, while in Rome”, is what we urgently require to remember and learn. Just ‘pointing finger’ and soliciting actions, is neither the solution to our woes nor the end to it.

The Bezboruah Committee by Ministry of Home and the Principal Secretary (Home) Committee by Lt. Governor Delhi plus all the Advisories to all States by Ministry of Home, are in place. Despite these devoid of the imperative retrospection and introspections by the N.E. people, the hydra headed ‘racial profiling’ might persist. Sometimes realizing one’s own limitations is one’s strength and molting can capacitate adaption to environments.
