NEC releases over Rs 81.50 cr in Jan; Nagaland gets Rs 5.71 cr

Shillong, February 11 (MExN): The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MoDONER), through the North Eastern Council (NEC) Secretariat, Shillong, has updated the status of projects for Nagaland for January 2026, according to a report released on February 10.

During January 2026, the NEC released a total of Rs 81,50,78,461 across all northeastern states as well as to various regional and other agencies in the region. The release covers infrastructure development, livelihood initiatives, cultural promotion, research and innovation activities.

For Nagaland, the NEC released Rs 5,71,73,750 under its scheme for several projects, including the Community Trade Link Centre (CLTC) at Jalukie in Peren district; construction of a Working Women’s Hostel at Kohima; capacity building and infrastructure development for off-road tourism; a bamboo incense and toothpick manufacturing unit at Jalukie; and construction of classrooms and a 40-bedded boys’ hostel with furniture and amenities at Government Polytechnic, Seithekema-C, Chümoukedima.

Under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) (Roads), Rs 5.61 crore was released for road connectivity projects in Nagaland. The amount covers construction of a road from Jalukie (NH-129A) to the New DC Complex model township in Peren district. The project is expected to improve access to remote and administrative areas, benefiting around 18,000 people across five villages.

In addition, the NEC disbursed Rs 32,59,10,251 to central, regional and other agencies, including educational institutions and cultural organisations, during the month.

Major project interventions implemented by central and regional agencies during January include the Community Development Programme of the Koireng tribe in Manipur, involving establishment of a resource centre for study of linguistic art and culture; promotion of cane and bamboo production through market intelligence and design intervention in Mizoram and Nagaland; and construction of school buildings, hostels and science laboratories in Mizoram, Assam and Manipur.

Other projects include construction of a boys’ hostel and school building at Khongong in Wapung village, East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya; establishment of kiwi orchards in the North Eastern Region; construction of a school building at Vivekananda Tripureswari Vidya Mandir in Unakoti, Tripura; construction of colleges in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur; and development of a multipurpose hall-cum-badminton hall and futsal playground at Saikot, Churachandpur, Manipur.

Projects also covered development of playgrounds in Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya; construction of a community centre for musical, cultural and skill development at Krishnanagar, Agartala; construction of Vivekananda School at Haflong, Dima Hasao district of Assam; promotion of tourism in Manipur and Mizoram; tourist circuit development in Senapati district, Manipur; establishment of a bamboo tissue culture unit; construction of a multipurpose convention centre and space exhibition facility at NESAC; and setting up of scientific pig breeding units in the North East, Phase-II.

Further initiatives include integrated tea tourism in Tamenglong district, Manipur; bamboo primary centres in selected areas; setting up of North East Ashtalaxmi Haat and Experience Centre for handicrafts and handloom artisans; development of a multi-disciplinary training-cum-resource centre in Shillong; mithun conservation and breeding centres in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur; a multipurpose herbal extraction unit at Mao, Senapati district; and bamboo vacuum pressure impregnation treatment plants in the region.

Non-project activities included international, national, regional and state-level seminars, cultural festivals, youth exchanges, technology and innovation events, academic and linguistic workshops, and studies on sustainable development.

Key events during the month comprised multi agri-horti activities in Manipur and Meghalaya; a two-day International Sustainable Summit 2025 on “Promoting Sustainable Development through Innovation, Conservation and Inclusive Growth in North East India”; promotion of commercial bamboo plantation; programmes on recent trends in biological sciences in the North East; the First Think India Northeast Summit (TINES-2025); Eagle Nest Bird Festival in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh; Sikpui Roui (Hmar festival) in Mizoram; and Darlong Tharlak Kut and Ranglong Khohui festivals.

These initiatives were implemented through agencies including the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCRMS), North Eastern Development Finance Corporation (NEDFi), North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd (NEHHDC), North East Cane and Bamboo Development Centre (NECBDC), universities, NITs, IITs and cultural organisations, the report added.
