CHÜMOUKEDIMA, OCTOBER 26 (MExN): On the occasion of United Nations Day, the International Relations (IR) Programme of North East Christian University (NECU) organised its first Model United Nations (MUN) on October 24.
Dr Hutoka Sumi, acting as the UN Secretary-General, declared the General Assembly open. The welcome address was delivered by Dr Chibenthung Yanthan, who briefed participants on the conceptualisation of the event. Vivekananda Das, MA student of the IR Programme, provided a brief history of the United Nations.
Ten students representing the United States, India, China, Japan, Russia, Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Germany debated various international issues and proposed resolutions to be adopted by the General Assembly. Witenthuibo Chawang, an alumnus of NECU’s IR Programme, served as the President of the General Assembly.
Key themes discussed included the need for collective responsibility, global cooperation, multilateralism, peace, security, development, human rights, climate change, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and respect for international law. Delegates from India, Japan, and Singapore highlighted concerns over the non-inclusive nature of the UN Security Council and urged for India’s inclusion as a permanent member.
Chan Seth, MA student representing Myanmar called for recognition of the National Unity Government as the legitimate democratic authority in Myanmar. Pongmei P Konyak, MA student representing China, discussed ongoing global conflicts and supported a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine issue.
The proposed resolutions were put to vote by the President of the General Assembly. The session concluded with remarks from Dr Hutoka Sumi and a vote of thanks by Dr Keneisenuo Solo, Coordinator of the IR Programme.
