Need to develop sustainable breeding plan to improve mithun population

Dimapur, September 23 (MExN): Dr. RS Gandhi, Assistant Director General (Animal Production & Breeding), ICAR, New Delhi has asserted that sustainable breeding plan needs to be developed for the improvement of mithun population of the country.  

He stated this during the 23rd Institute Management Committee (IMC) meeting held at ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema on September 23. The meeting chaired by Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Director, ICAR-NRCM was held to discuss the important administrative and financial issues of the Institute, according to a press release received here.  

In the morning, the committee members visited the institute’s mithun farm and took the account of various farm activities.  

Dr. SM Deb, Director, ICAR-NRC on Yak, Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh suggested that initially the institute should target to improve the average daily weight gain to at least 500 g/day to make the mithun husbandry suitable.  

Meanwhile, Dr. MK Tamuli, Principal Scientist (Animal Reproduction), ICAR-NRC on Pig, Guwahati had an interaction with the scientists of the institute and advised them for training of mithun bulls for collection of semen.  

The meeting was also attended by Dr. Nazrul Haque, Principal Scientist, ICAR-NRCM; PK Nayak, AFA&O, ICAR-NRC on Pig, Guwahati; Lachit Kachari, Non-official Member & Progressive Farmer, Dimapur.
