IMPHAL: Various speakers today echoed for the protection of the indigenous people of Manipur and also recalled the events that had led to the loss of Manipur sovereignty to the British in the 19th century.

All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) chief Y. Mani while speaking on the occasion dwelt on the need for unity of all communities in Manipur to work for the common good. He cautioned that there is a possibility of the indigenous communities of Manipur getting extinct. Mani however lamented that there is no unity among the people of the state and for which there is no needed energy to mobilise to achieve this end.
Professor N Joykumar of Manipur University said that there were several battles fought by the Manipuris against the British but the state government of Manipur chooses to commemorate only the battle at Khongjom. He stressed that other battles fought in Manipur were also equally important.
