The DEF Tuensang commemorated Police Commemoration Day and Rastriya Ekta Diwas (Unity Day) with the theme ‘role of police in society and nation building’ at Town Hall, Tuensang on November 1.

To mark the event, a panel discussion was held with Rajashekara N, IPS, DIGP (R/NAP) Tuensang, Mongkoyanchu Chang, NPS, Commandant VG, Tuensang and S Ato Chang, Rtd SDPO as the speakers. It was moderated by I Bunglang Chang, NPS, Dy SP (R) DEF Tuensang.

Speaking in the panel, Mongkoyanchu underlined the need to improve the relationship between civil societies and police. He said that police should instill the sense of confidence in the public and to respect the uniform.

He said that the concept of crime is changing; however, the basis of crime remains the same. “Information must be provided by the public on any crime but it is only possible when there is a good relationship between the police and the public. India has one of the most liberal democracies in the world and if we cannot function properly then it will be difficult to perform in any other form of government. We need to adapt to the changes by improving relationship between the civil societies and the police.”

Highlighting the importance of police at every institution in the society, Rajashekara said, “There are a lot of expectations from the police. Police force being a properly disciplined order goes above and beyond to serve the society and nation.”

S Ato Chang who has served in the police force for 38 years said that ‘maybe this is the first kind of such meeting between the police and the public in Tuensang.’ He reminded that the ‘police are there for the civilians and therefore, there must be cooperation between the two.’
