DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 29 (MExN): The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) in Chümoukedima welcomed the Splendour Outreach Team from Malaysia and Singapore for an interactive session on October 29. Led by Rev Deacon Dr Sherman Kuek was held at the Bishop Abraham Memorial Hall within the Peace Centre, focusing on the integration of spirituality within social work practice.

In his keynote address, Dr Kuek praised NEISSR and the Kohima Diocese for establishing the institution in the Northeast, a region facing significant social challenges. He highlighted the crucial role of peace studies in addressing conflicts and commended NEISSR for its unique approach that blends spirituality with social work. Emphasizing the importance of compassion, commitment, and dedication, Dr Kuek encouraged participants to embody Christian values such as love, peace, and justice. “Peace is more than the absence of war; it begins with self,” he stated.

During the Q&A session, students actively engaged with Dr Kuek on a range of topics, including the cultivation of spiritual growth. He cited ancient intellectual monks and early church fathers as examples of a balanced life rooted in prayer, work, and the study of sacred texts.

This model, he suggested, can guide modern students in integrating spiritual growth into their daily lives. Addressing questions on social justice, Dr Kuek asserted that supporting the poor and upholding their dignity is fundamental to practicing one’s faith.

Earlier, Dr Fr CP Anto, Principal of NEISSR, opened the session by welcoming the delegates and expressing gratitude to Dr Kuek for facilitating the MoU between NEISSR and CHRISTE. This partnership has enabled NEISSR to offer scholarships to underprivileged Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students and foster collaboration on various research initiatives, he stated. The session was moderated by Elizabeth Pojar, Assistant Professor at NEISSR.

Vote of thanks was delivered by Fr Lawrence Khing, Vice Principal of NEISSR. He expressed gratitude to Dr Kuek and the Splendour team for inspiring NEISSR’s students to blend their spiritual journeys with a commitment to social service. Alem Andrew, a fifth-semester BSW student, represented the student body by sharing his appreciation for the guidance and support received throughout the session.
