
Kohima, January 27 (MExN): Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development (NEPED) in collaboration with Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), Coimbatore, is organizing a 2-day “Experience Sharing Workshop on Communities’ Initiatives for Biodiversity Conservation in Northeast India” on January 28 and 29 at DUDA Guest House, Kohima.
A press note issued by Administrator, NEPED Vengota Nakro mentioned that Principal Secretary and Agriculture Production Commissioner, Nagaland, H. K. Khulu will grace the Inaugural Session that will begin at 8:45 AM as the chief guest. The two days workshop will feature prominent researchers in the Northeast working in the field of biodiversity conservation and will also interact with the knowledgeable persons who are managing Community Conservation Areas in their respective areas and also share their experiences.
Discussions on issues such as significance of indigenous ecological knowledge documentation, collective action for community conservation, significance of biodiversity conservation in the Northeast and glimpses of community conservation in Arunachal Pradesh will also be featured stated the press release. Strengths and gaps of the community conservation efforts will also feature in the discussion. It is said that NEPED has implemented a project entitled- Strengthening Conservation Efforts in Nagaland (SCEN) in collaboration with SACON (Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History).
The project funded by Dorabjee Tata Trust (SDTT) was a three (3) year project which commenced in 2007. The project dealt on documenting Indigenous Ecological Knowledge (IEK) in five eastern districts of Nagaland viz- Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire, Longleng and Phek. The press note also mentioned that since the project has come to a close and as mandated by the donors, an ‘Experience Sharing Workshop on Communities’ Initiatives for Biodiversity Conservation in Northeast India’ will be initiated during the workshop.
