Also anti-Racism law, special police unit to tackle racial atrocities
DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 30 (MExN): The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), comprising major student bodies from the seven North Eastern states, has condemned the brutal killing of Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura, who succumbed to injuries after being attacked in Dehradun on December 9.
In a memorandum addressed to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, NESO stated that Angel Chakma was beaten and stabbed in a racially motivated attack and died on December 26 after struggling for over two weeks in hospital. His brother, Michael Chakma, was also assaulted in the incident. The attackers targeted them because they “looked different” from the so-called Aryan majority and subjected them to degrading racial abuses.
The NESO, representing student organisations including the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU), condemned such atrocities and highlighted that people from the North East have long faced harassment across India, often with fatal consequences.
The organisation demanded urgent intervention from the Uttarakhand government to ensure mental, social, and physical security for students and residents from the North East in Dehradun and elsewhere in the state.
NESO’s key demands include capital punishment for the perpetrators of the crime at the earliest, establishment of a Special Police Station dedicated to handling cases related to racial discrimination and atrocities against North East people and enactment of a stringent Anti-Racism Act to address racial discrimination effectively.
The memorandum appealed to the Chief Minister for immediate and effective measures by the authorities to protect the North East community and uphold their dignity.
