Mokokchung, June 10 (DIPR): The official residence of Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung, popularly known as DC Bungalow, has received a new look with the installation of a new log drum. Crafted by Mokokchung DBs Union through LADP fund, the new log drum, 25 foot in length and 8 foot in circumference, was formally inaugurated by Sushil Kumar Patel, Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung on June 9.
Rongsenyanger DB, who chaired the inaugural function, said the new log drum was crafted out of East Indian almond tree (Hollock), Botanical name-Terminaliamyriocapa. He said the suitable tree for the log drum was donated by DFO Mokokchung Division from Minkong Reserved Forest.
Allaying doubts on replacement of the old log drum by a new one at DC Bungalow, PA to DC Zulu DB and other senior DBs made it clear that installation of the new log drum is just an effort on their part to preserve the age old tradition of having at least one log drum in every Ao village and to enable younger generations to witness the tradition and nothing else.
Senior DB Chubatoshi said no rituals or sacrificial acts were performed in the process of crafting the log drum stating such acts are now thing of the past. “Our objective is simply to preserve our rich culture and tradition and this log drum will remain here as a heritage,” he added.
DC in his short speech thanked Mokokchung DBs Union for their good work and expressed hope that the log drum will be one of the attractions of DC Bungalow for officials and visitors from other parts of the country and abroad.
On behalf of the people of Mokokchung district, Ao Senden President, Imliyanger thanked the DBs Union for their tireless effort in adding a new look to the DC Bungalow.
Meanwhile, the DBs Union extended gratitude to Mechanical department, Mokokchung Division and SP Mokokchung for their help in transportation of the log to the DC Bungalow.
