Nagaland University Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.Kannan today said that things are moving too fast and challenged both the teachers and the students alike to “wake up and participate in the development of Nagaland” while delivering his speech during the inaugural function of two hostels at Nagaland University headquarters Lumami. The Vice-Chancellor also said that the days of “commanding and controlling” are gone and that he believes in “connection and co-operation.” He said that “connect and co-operate” will be the “mantra” for the University in the days to come. He disclosed that there are presently about sixteen thousand students under the University and added that it will be increased ten-fold and thus the University will “connect” with one hundred sixty thousand students within a few years. This will be possible with the introduction of management, engineering and other professional programs, he added. He also visualized Lumami transforming into a township in the near future, and challenged all concerned to work towards realizing it. The Vice-Chancellor indicated his willingness to reside in the University Headquarters and also expressed that he expects commitment from the teachers to also reside in the campus.

The Professor also mentioned that the University will soon have an Engineering college with five branches including schools of agriculture, bio-technology, computer science, electronics and information technology, which perhaps would be the first of its kind in the NE of India. The introduction of schools of mass media and Master of Computer Application were also hinted. He said that the University still has a long way to go and that in the next twenty years Nagaland University will be renowned and distinguished if all the programs materialize.

The inaugural function was held at the University Auditorium. The function was chaired by Dr. Hautu Rengma, Deputy Registrar. Short speeches were also delivered by Prof. A.Lanunungsang and the President of PGSU, Lumami Imlikokba. The Vice-Chancellor next visited the site of the two newly constructed hostels which was followed by interactive sessions with the students, the teachers and the non-teaching staff.
