Three persons have been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of GB Abdul Kayum Talukdar, the Gaonbura of New Market, Dimapur, in June. He was fatally shot by ‘unidentified assailants’ on June 7.

In a written reply to a query posed by MLA Kuzholuzo Nienu in the State Assembly on August 29, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister and Minister-in-Charge of the Home Department, Y Patton, informed that a criminal case has also been registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, read with Section 27(3) of the Arms Act, 1959, in connection with the case at the Sub-Urban Police Station on June 7. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been constituted, he said.

“In this connection, three persons have been arrested to date and forwarded to judicial custody; the case is presently under active investigation,” he added.

The Home Minister’s reply is somewhat divergent from what the Nagaland Police had stated regarding the case on July 5. Addressing the media at Rhododendron Hall, Police Complex, Chümoukedima, Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma informed that five persons have been arrested in connection with the June 7 killing of late Talukdar. It is not known whether some were released after subsequent investigation.

Meanwhile, regarding the status of the ‘alleged drug kingpin’ Bahar Uddin, arrested in connection with Narcotic Police Station Case No. 022/2023 under Section 28 read with Section 27A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, on March 21, 2024, Patton said that an SIT was constituted for the investigation. Currently, the accused is detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PITNDPS Act) 1988, he added.
