New Market in Kohima is now ‘Littering Free Zone’

Kohima, June 24 (MExN): In order to generate awareness on sanitation and sensitise the denizens to cleanliness, the launching programme of ‘Littering Free Zone’ was organised by the sanitation committee of Ward No.8, New Market, held at its Panchayat Hall on June 23 in Kohima. The sanitation committee distributed numbers of banners and hoardings some of which read messages like I love my New Market, please keep our colony litter free, Cleanliness and good sanitation in schools is a matter of high importance, the objective of cleaning is not just to clean but to feel happiness living within the environment, etc. These banners were put up and installed at various places in the colony.

Campaign needs mass support

While formally declaring the colony as ‘Litter Free Zone’ during the launching, Ruokuobeizo Nyusou, chairman of New Market Panchayat urged the gathering comprising of sanitation committee, ward angels, youth members and women representatives to cooperate, work together and contribute towards the cleanliness of the capital city.

He informed that ‘Litter Free Zone’ programme is a part of government policies and Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) would come for inspection after every six months and give away award to the cleanest among the 19 colonies under Kohima district. He therefore, urged the colony members to take part in the good competition.

Nyusou also stressed on the need to create cleanliness awareness among the schools at the colony. He encouraged the gathering to approach someone to clean up their act, if they see the person dropping litter so that others may benefit, adopt and implement the good examples they are setting.

While stating that cleanliness begins at home, the chairman appealed to stop littering and start the practice of cleanliness beginning from one's family. He also underscored the importance of food safety, keeping clean surroundings and healthy environment with scientific discipline. “Let us keep ourselves healthy, follow government policy and be influencers to lead forward by setting examples,” Nyusou said.

Zerüzo Suohu, Vice-chairman New Market Panchayat was appreciative of the litter free programme which is a part of KMC initiatives for creating awareness and encouraged people’s participation towards cleanliness. He reminded to let go of one’s ego towards cleanliness with positive attitude by exemplifying how Japanese could attend FIFA World Cup and clean off the stadium by collecting and disposing the trash left by spectators after the match.

Kovi Meyase, Joint Secretary, Land Resources Development, Government of Nagaland also spoke on the occasion. He asked the sanitation committee to sensitive the shop keepers to have sufficient waste bins as we seem to have more litters from the shops. He asked them to approach ANTA to facilitate their taxi drivers with dustbins as most of the complaints of littering are from the taxi stand under the colony jurisdiction which is disturbing the public convenience.

He also encouraged them to organise more similar programmes in the days to come. Meyase further appealed for more women’s participation in the noble cause.

Earlier, Tosovi Pusa invoked God's blessings; Khrupavil Hobo delivered the welcome note and chaired the programme while vote of thanks was proposed by Viketo Rote.
