New Market, PWD are the cleanest wards in Kohima

The Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) today honoured New Market and PWD wards under KMC for bagging the cleanest ward award 2022 conducted by Urban Development, Nagaland.

Through a felicitation programme held here today, the KMC handed over Rs 20,000 to New Market ward for bagging 1st position and Rs 10,000 to PWD ward for 2nd position in the recent ward level competition for the “The Cleanest Urban Local Bodies (ULBs)/Wards Award 2022 Nagaland.”

Speaking on the occasion, KMC Administrator, T Lanusenla Longkumer informed that “The cleanest urban local bodies (ULBs)/ wards competition” was conducted by Urban Development Department recently, and the state level programme was held earlier on June 28 last.

The competition was based on different parameters. Apart from the categorization of ULBs into different categories, the department even expanded the award to best effort, best innovation and best community mobilization.

Meanwhile, she thanked KMC sweepers, sanitation workers and Züb Züb for the improvement in the cleanliness of the commercial areas in Kohima.

Challenging the people to work with more conviction and sincerity, she said, “if we all can come together and work in co-ordination, if the overall cleanliness of our town improves, if we can change our habits, our mindset and our outlook, we can bring changes in the mindset of the people.”

On the other hand, she informed that the annual KMC Cleanest Ward Award will continue.

From this year onwards, the KMC will check dumping of garbage in drains as well.

She said that the ward will get negative marking if single-use plastic is seized from shops/ business establishments/restaurants/eateries etc.

Longkumer also requested the concerned wards to submit their annual social work calendar to KMC office by August 10, 2022.

Chaired by KMC Office Secretary, Zakiekhotuo Kiso, the felicitation programme was followed by meeting on SuPs.

KMC to check single-use plastic from July 20

Longkumer told the gathering that the KMC has already made an appeal along with fliers of banned single-use plastic and requested all the wards to distribute the same to the public and paste poster at some prominent location in their respective wards.

There is a District Task Force (DTF) on single-use plastic headed by Deputy Commissioner. 

She informed that the KMC will undertake checking of single-use plastic from July 20 onwards. The defaulters will be penalized Rs 1000 for first offence, second offence at Rs 2000 and the third offence will be cancellation of trade licence, she said. “Public/customers who insist on plastic bags from shopkeepers can also be reported to us also,” KMC Administrator said.

Through fliers, the KMC asked the public/customers to carry own shopping bag and not to ask for plastic bags while shopping. Meanwhile, KMC sought the cooperation of the public for a cleaner and safer environment.
