A temporary police outpost was formally inaugurated at Alichen Road, Ungma, near the Settsü village gate on August 6, in the efforts to strengthen law enforcement and community safety in the region. The unveiling of the inaugural outpost stone was done by Vesupra Kezo, NPS, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mokokchung.

In his address, SSP Vesupra Kezo highlighted the urgent and long-felt need for establishing a police presence in the area. Citing official data, he informed that in the last three years, a total of 21 criminal cases had been registered in the jurisdiction, leading to the arrest of 85 individuals involved in serious offences such as extortion, drug trafficking, smuggling of prohibited liquor, and vehicle accident-related cases.

“These criminal activities have underlined the need for a stronger and more proactive policing mechanism to ensure the safety and security of the local populace,” Kezo stated.

He further explained that the existing Police Station-II, which has jurisdiction over the area, is located at a considerable distance, making timely police intervention and public access to essential services difficult. “This outpost will enable faster emergency response, more effective patrolling, and better surveillance of crime-prone areas,” he emphasised.

While the outpost is currently a temporary arrangement, the SSP assured that it is only a precursor to a permanent police station in the near future. “For now, due to the shortage of manpower across the Nagaland Police, only six to seven personnel will be posted here,” he stated.

Kezo described the establishment of the outpost as a joint venture, thanking various stakeholders for their roles in making the project a reality. He expressed gratitude to Sharingain Longkumer, Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, for his crucial support in facilitating the government’s approval, providing the required land, and constructing a new building, without which, he said, “the project would not have seen the light of day.”

He emphasised that this outpost is not merely a symbol of authority, but a center dedicated to serving the people. “Every officer posted here carries the sacred duty to protect the rights and dignity of every citizen, to act with fairness and empathy, and to be a source of assurance in times of need,” he said.

Calling for community cooperation, SSP Kezo appealed to village councils of Ungma, Settsü, Aolijen, Mangmetong, and Longkhum to join hands with the police in fostering a culture of shared responsibility in crime prevention and awareness. “The role of the police cannot be effective in isolation,” he stated. “Together, we must ensure that law and order is not just maintained but nurtured as a shared responsibility.”

He further urged the public to report any cases of police misconduct, assuring that strict action would be taken against any personnel who violate professional standards. “If any personnel are found misbehaving or acting unlawfully, please report to me. I will take stringent action,” he affirmed.

On a broader note, Kezo tied the need for policing directly to the district’s development aspirations. “We all want development, and it is needed — but for development to come, peace and security must come first. When there’s safety and a sense of security, people will come, and development will follow,” he asserted.

EAC Ongpangkong, Sangpangchang Longkumer, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the strategic value of the outpost’s location. “This highway is not only the lifeline of Mokokchung but also of several other districts,” Longkumer noted. “While this area falls under Police Station-II, its distance from the locality has made reporting and timely response difficult. A checkpost in this area was much needed for the security and convenience of the people.”

He urged the police posted at the new outpost to perform their duties with diligence and without compromising integrity. “Ensuring public safety and curbing corruption is not solely the duty of the police. It is a shared responsibility of the people and village councils,” he said, calling for collective support in maintaining law and order.

The programme was chaired by Y Tumchobemo Yanthan, NPS, Additional Superintendent of Police, Mokokchung while short speeches were delivered by representatives from the Ungma Village Council and Ongpangkong Mungdang. The dedicatory prayer was offered by Temjen, Pastor of the Police Baptist Church (PBC), DEF Mokokchung.
