As the result to the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly election was declared on March 3, it emerged that some had lost the game just by few numbers, while few won by huge margins. Meanwhile, there were also new as well as unexpected winners who toppled sitting legislators. The Morung Express presents to you some highlights of the poll result.
Bigwig slayers:
• Bharatiya Janata Party’s new entrant Temjen Imna Along won Alongtaki A/C seat by a margin of 86 against Naga People’s Front’s Dr. Benjongliba Aier.
• Independent’s Tongpang Ozukum emerged victorious after a tight 5-way contest in Angetyongpang A/C. He beat big names like Alemtemshi Jamir (NDPP) and sitting MLA S Chuba Longkumer (NPF).
• National People’s Party candidate Imnatiba won Arkakong A/C seat by a 793 margin against two-time NPF’s legislator Nuklutoshi.
• NDPP’s Zale Neikha defeated sitting MLA Er. Kropol Vitsu (NPF) in Southern Angami II A/C.
• First time candidate Toshi Wungtung of NDPP unseated two-time legislator R. Tohanba of NPF by a margin of 307 votes in Shamator Chessore A/C
• V. Kashiho Sangtam of BJP defeated Seyochung Sitimi constituency heavyweight C Kipili Sangtam (NPF) by a margin of 1162 votes.
Lucky Seven – Winning by less than 100 votes:
• H. Haiying of BJP beat sitting legislator P Longon of NPF by a margin of just 5 votes in Noklak Assembly Constituency. They both got 5643 and 5638 votes respectively.
• N. Thongwang of NPF with 5429 votes retained his Mon Town A/C seat by a margin of 28 votes. The runner-up Y. Mankhao of National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) had secured 5401 votes.
• Dr Imtiwapang Aier of NPF won by 62 votes over TN Mannen (NDPP) in Impur A/C. Aier garnered 4852 votes against Mannen’s 4790.
• Y Vikheho Swu, sitting NPF MLA, defeated Dr. Sukhato A Sema (BJP) by 70 votes in a three-way contest in 13 Pughuboto A/C. Swu and Sema received 6258 and 6188 votes respectively.
• Yitachu (NPF) saved his Meluri A/C seat by 74 votes. Z Nyusietho Nyuthe of NDPP got 7854 votes against Yitachu’s 7928.
• Temjen Imna Along (BJP) unseated Dr. Benjongliba (NPF) by just 86 votes in Alongtaki A/C. The BJP candidate got 5981 votes, while Benjongliba received 5895 votes.
• Imtikumzuk (NDPP) won by 88 votes over Toshipokba (NPF) in Aonglenden A/C. Imtikumzuk managed to secure 5206 votes, while the latter garnered 5118 votes.
Highest Margin:
• Dr. Chumben Murry of Naga People’s Front with 14,870 votes has the highest winning margin of 8555. The runner-up candidate, Y. Mhonbemo Humtsoe of Janata Dal (United), secured 6315 votes.
• Chief Minister TR Zeliang retained his Peren Assembly Constituency seat after beating nearest rival, Iherie Ndang of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, by a margin of 5432 votes.
