DIMAPUR: The next round of peace talks between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM) is likely to be held on December 15-16 at Bangkok. Describing it as “very crucial”, Deputy Kilonser MIP Kraiba Chawang said that the decision on whether to extend the seven year long ceasefire would depend on the response of New Delhi to the proposal already put forth sometime back.

“Our expectation is that the Indian side should not delay the matter anymore”, Chawang said while keeping in mind the possibility of the ceasefire not being extended. The current ceasefire is of six months and expires on January 31.

It may be mentioned that the Union Minister for Program Implementation Oscar Fernandes, who is also Head of the Group of Minister (GoP) in the Indo-Naga political talks, had described as “positive” the proposal of Thuingaleng Muivah, General Secretary of the NSCN (IM), for forging a close relationship with India in a step-by-step manner.

“The proposal for a close federation with India, addressing India’s security concerns and a two-step process for the integration of Naga areas “cannot be objected to” by the Government of India”, Muivah is reported to have said during the last round of talks held at the Thai capital Bangkok on October 11-12.
