Dimapur, April 19 (MExN): Travelling to Northeast will be jerk-free and safer with the conversion of 90% of the tracks under North East Frontier Railway division to ‘Long Welded Rail’ (LWR), an official informed today.
“With the fitting of 648 kms of its tracks with Long Welded Rail in 2017-18, N.F. Railway has converted 90% of its track length to LWR,” Pranav Jyoti Sharma Chief Public Relations Officer stated in a press release.
“LWR tracks are those in which there are no fish plated joints. Since rail joints are a potential source of jerk, long welded rails give a much smoother ride and also very safe as possibility of joint failure is eliminated altogether,” the release said.
The LWRs, according to the release, are made by end to end welding of single piece rails, each of 13 M length and these rails are rolled under very strict conditions to comply with exact standards in the factories of SAIL, it added. It is also used for tunnels, important bridges and for platform lines as well in railway stations.
“With the introduction of Long Welded Rails, not only will train journeys in North-East be safer, this will also allow for faster speed,” the release maintained adding, “Conversion of fish plated track into LWR is an important pre requisite for improvement of riding quality, for the introduction of higher speed and improved rolling stock (coaches).”
