NGBF calls for expedited Naga solution and upholds traditional institutions

Dimapur, December 16 (MExN): The Nagaland Gaonburas (Village Chiefs) Federation (NGBF) convened an executive meeting on December 13 at the Tourist Lodge in Dimapur. The meeting, attended by representatives from various areas, focused on significant resolutions concerning the Naga political issue, the preservation of traditional institutions, and the welfare of Gaonburas.

The Federation underscored the Naga political solution as the foremost priority for the Naga people. In a resolution, the NGBF appealed to the Government of India and the negotiating groups to expedite the peace process. They also called on all underground factions to unify efforts towards achieving a final resolution.

The meeting firmly resolved to retain the nomenclature of Gaonburas (GBs), emphasizing its historical and institutional significance. According to the NGBF, the GBship has been a cornerstone in safeguarding Naga traditions and customary laws. Any changes to this nomenclature, whether in urban or rural areas, were deemed unacceptable.

In addressing the welfare of Gaonburas, the Federation appealed for enhanced entitlements, including increased maintenance allowances, improved retirement benefits, and support for families in the event of a GB’s demise. Additionally, the meeting resolved to oppose any actions against Gaonburas that bypass proper verification and due procedures, warning of stern action against any such attempts.

The NGBF reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rights and traditions of the Gaonburas and urged all stakeholders to respect and support their role in Naga society.
