NH-29 blockade from July 17 over unpaid compensation

Kohima, July 15 (MExN): Aggrieved landowners affected by the Kohima-Jessami 2 Lane Road construction have announced a total blockade of National Highway 29 from Packages 2, 3, 4 and 5, starting 6:00 AM on July 17, citing non-payment of damage compensation by the authorities.

In a press release issued on Monday, the Convenor of the aggrieved landowners, Kuveluyi Chuzho, stated that the decision to impose the blockade comes following the expiry of the deadline for the payment of compensations, which was “initially scheduled for the 15th of July 2025.”

“Until a personal confirmation is received from the Deputy Commissioner of Phek that the compensatory amount has been deposited into his account from NHIDCL, the blockade will remain in effect,” the statement said.

The landowners informed that during the blockade, only security forces, fire and emergency services, and medical emergencies will be granted relaxation.

They said the blockade is being undertaken to draw attention to the “unresolved issue of compensation owed to the landowners affected by the construction project.”

In light of the blockade, the public has been urged to follow a travel advisory and avoid the affected stretch of NH-29. Travellers have been advised to take the Phek–Pfutsero–Kohima route via Zuketsa or via Chetheba, and vice versa.

“The landowners express regret for any inconvenience caused by the blockade and seek understanding from the public as they pursue a resolution to this matter. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated during this critical juncture,” the statement added.
