NIA appeals acquittal of NSCN (IM) cadre

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has appealed the High Court in a case pertaining to the NSCN (IM). Two “appeals against acquittal” were filed and registered on August 2 at the Kohima Bench, Gauhati High Court challenging the acquittal of two persons accused in an “illegal cash transaction” case, which was investigated by the NIA. 

As per ecourts documents, the appeals were against one Col Rayilung Nsarangbe, NSCN (IM) and another accused in the case, one Zingshongam Muinao.  

The duo alongwith 4 others were arrested on July 4, 2020 during an Assam Rifles’s raid in Dimapur. A Defence press release at the time informed that 6 persons, including two active NSCN (IM) cadres, were nabbed in a suspected extortion and money laundering case linked to the said Naga Political Group. Over Rs 1.58cr, firearms and explosives were recovered during the raid, which the release said was carried out based on “specific intelligence.”   

The case was initially investigated by the Nagaland Police before it was taken over by the NIA, which registered the case at the Agency’s Guwahati branch 5 days after the raid. Following the investigation, the accused persons were tried at a Special NIA Court in Dimapur.
