Niathu sports festival underway

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 4 (MExN): The second edition of Niathu Sports Festival, organized by Niathu Privilege Club, kicked off Friday with last year’s festival champion Assam Terriers beating Global Open University in two straight sets (25-19 and 25-17) in the men’s volleyball.
In women’s volleyball, Lamkang Snu Lop Dimapur also outplayed Salulemang Students’ Union in straight sets (25-10 and 25-16) in the opening match.
Earlier, GOC 3 Corps, Lt Gen Dalbir Singh, the chief guest of the inaugural function of the festival held at Niathu Resort, Chumukedima, said sports is an important part of one’s life as it inculcates in a person discipline, quick response and team spirit.
The general who is also a former national polo player hoped that the event will not only provide an opportunity to the youths to display their talents but that they can be identified and groomed for national and international sporting events.
Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, who acted as the chief host of the sports festival in lieu chief minister Neiphiu Rio, who could not turn up due to the latter’s engagement in Delhi, said that the festival was the brainchild of the chief minister.
Azo said that the main objectives of the Niathu Sports Festival are; to be part of corporate social responsibility, sto provide a platform to youths to showcase their talents and, to identify local talents and nurture them for higher pursuits in the identified sports disciplines.
Besides tennis, volleyball and billiards, another addition in this year’s festival is angling, with more than 300 anglers registering for the completion so far.
Commissioner & Secretary, Abieu Kire chaired the inaugural programme and Niathu Privilege Club member Ato Yepthomi proposed vote of thanks.
