
Dimapur, March 16 (MExN): A total of 9 persons were arrested during the last 7 days in Dimapur for various crimes related to extortion in Dimapur, a police official said today.
The Anti Extortion Teams (AET), which made the arrests, has been placed for “alert and surveillance” over different commercial areas in Dimapur , the Addl. Dy Commissioner of Police/PRO Dimapur said in a press release.
According to the PRO release, the first arrest was made on March 9, when one one person identified as HimatoYepthomi of Viyelho village, Zunheboto was arrested by the AET while he was caught “extorting money” from the trucks plying in the bricks kiln around Bamunpukhuri area, Dimapur.
Money in cash and incriminating documents in the forms of leaflets belonging to the NSCN (IM) was seized from his possession, it said.
On March 10, three persons were arrested by the AET from Khermahal area, Dimapur while they were carrying out extortion activities. The police identified them as AthongbaSangtam of Singrao village, Kiphire, reportedly a Captain of the NNC(NA); ZhaitoSumi of Hoishe village; Khunu and Sangtam of Pholongri Village, Kiphire.
One person identified as Lukheyi Yepthomi of Khumishi village was also arrested by the AET on March 11 while he was “collecting taxes in the name of the NPGs” from various commercial vehicles around Doshehe Market area, Dimapur.
Alferd Sumi, reportedly a Leacy of the NPGN, was also arrested by the AET around Metro Hospital area, Dimapur on March 13 while he was “extorting money from the business establishments.”
Again on March 15, Bokito Sumi; reportedly a Sergeant of the NSCN(R) was arrested while “collecting illegal taxes from the commercial establishments” falling under West Police Station jurisdiction.
The last arrest was made in March 16, when two persons were arrested by the AET while collecting illegal taxes from business establishment at Murgipatti area, Dimapur. They were identified as Heyito Aye, reportedly a Major of the FGN; and Atoshe Murru, reportedly a Leacy of the FGN. Both were residents of Thilixu.
Money in cash and incriminating documents was seized from their possession, the police said.
The Dimapur Police further reminded citizens and the business communities that an active “Crime Helplines” has been functional to receive reports and complaints.
