Asserting that it was time for Nagas to speak out the truth, Parliamentary Secretary for Land Resources and Excise, BS Nganlang on Monday pointed out that the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989 was a failure. Nganlang said prior to the NLTP Act, the Excise personnel with almost the same strength of employees as now were tasked mostly for checking of licenses and selling liquor to minors.
He, however, said that after the Act, the duty of the limited personnel increased to keeping vigil on buyers, consumers, transporters at various check gates etc. Nganlang also pointed out that various health complications and deaths multiplied after the Act since the business of adulterated liquor flourished thereby affecting the health of many consumers.
“Before the NLTP Act, although there have been problems caused by irresponsible drinkers there was hardly any health problem caused by drinking liquor but after the Act was implemented many people have died owing to drinking adulterated liquor,” he maintained.
Nganlang also said that the NLTP Act was enacted and passed out of emotional decisions with intense pressure and equated it with situations that arose of the recent ULB elections. He was speaking at the Biodiversity Resource Centre, Ruzaphema.
